Women's Empowerment Through Sanitation in Rural India
Access to a clean-living condition and sanitation facility is everyone's fundamental right to live. Many people in parts of India, still practice open defecation, wherein, women suffer the most due to lack of proper sanitation facilities.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, an initiative taken by the Government to improve the sanitation facilities is being practiced in several parts of country. The project ensures a minimum of 50% representation for women in the village committees to take decisions relating to water supply and sanitation. This project was a massive hit in terms of empowering women. The Government officials suggest that women participation benefitted the project itself through their household knowledge, empathy towards women, and experience to ensure sustainability of sanitation and water supply.
Women participation must be increased in household and community decisions for finding sanitation solutions related to issues such as:
- Using the right technology for toilet construction
- Choosing a suitable location for building community toilets so that women feel safe
