LGSF A Green Technology Solution for Speedy Construction

The rising concern over depletion of the natural resources and the impact of the construction industry on global pollution and rapidly increasing landfills warrants greater attention for sustainable development. There is a growing need for newer construction materials and techniques that are more environmentally friendly and supports faster construction. One such technology that has gained wide acceptance in India is LGSF (Light Gauge Steel Frame).

 

LGSF is a new construction technology that uses cold-formed steel frames to build critical aspects of the modular building like load-bearing walls, floorings, and roofs. Today, one of India's most popular modular construction services, Nest-In by Tata Steel, has been leading the way in offering LGSF-based modular housing solutions like HabiNest.

In the purview of the growing demand for building newer homes, the government of India has been encouraging the use of modular construction technology to speed up the construction process. Since LGSF-based modular buildings like HabiNest are completely built in a factory, they can be constructed in 1/3rd time compared to the conventional construction.

 

Typically, it takes about 10 to 11 months to construct a 20,000 sq. ft building using the RCC construction method. In contrast, it takes less than three months to build HabiNest with a similar area. Thus, there is a scope for adopting this construction to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of homes.

 

A comparative study of LGSF home solutions like HabiNest with a conventional RCC structure found that the former offers many environmental benefits. It requires 65% lesser materials than a traditional structure. Besides, it uses 48% lesser fresh water and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 53%. Also, HabiNest is about 70% lighter than the conventional structure and is built using 100% recyclable steel.

The use of galvanised steel sheets in LGSF construction lends the structure supreme strength and makes it highly robust and more resistant to seismic disturbances and strong winds up to 240 km per hour than the conventional houses. Besides, happiness is made of high-quality steel from Tata Steel, which assures you of the quality of the material.

 

Since the majority of the construction takes place in a controlled environment, it reduces the risk of on-site accidents and injuries to labourers, which are quite common in traditional construction methods.

 

One of the significant drawbacks of the conventional RCC structures is that in the event of an unfortunate accident like a fire breakout, the entire structure can be burned down, causing significant loss of life and property. However, HabiNest is known to be an excellent fire-resistant structure. The steel walls are certified by NABL, and they can withstand fire for up to 90 minutes, ensuring the safety and security of the occupants.
