India is adding schools. The data on enrolment, the government targets, the infrastructure budgets - all point in the right direction. But there is a question sitting underneath all of it that rarely gets asked directly:
How long should it take to build a school?
A single-storey building, a few classrooms, a staffroom, and sanitation blocks. This is the kind of structure that is approved by the authorities. Building a structure like that takes anywhere from twelve to twenty-four months to hand over using traditional methods.
Meanwhile, the children for whom it’s been built for have moved through another academic year without access to the infrastructure.
The Infrastructure We Build Versus the Infrastructure We Need
India's school infrastructure deficit is not a new conversation. The gap between the number of functional, safe, well-equipped school buildings and the number that communities actually need has been documented across government reports, NGO assessments and district-level surveys for decades.
What gets less attention is the construction method problem sitting underneath it.
Conventional school construction - brick, mortar, RCC frame, site labour, wet trades, curing timelines is a system designed for permanence and sequential execution. It does not adapt well to urgency, remote locations, difficult terrain or tight budget cycles. It is also highly dependent on local contractor quality, material availability and supervision. These are variables that produce inconsistent outcomes even when the intent is good.
The result is a pattern that repeats across states: sanctioned schools that take years to complete, partially-built structures sitting in various stages of progress, and communities making do with whatever interim arrangement is available.

That is not a marginal improvement. For communities that have been waiting years, it is the difference between infrastructure that serves them and infrastructure that is still on a schedule.
